vie Baskin Opens “Paths of Life” at The Artists Gallery on First Friday

On First Friday, September 2, 2016, The Artists Gallery opened Evie Baskin’s newest portrait series, “Paths of Life.” These paintings feature portraits of people in uniform from Kent and Queen Anne’s Counties. This is Evie’s fourth portrait show of local residents since moving to the Eastern Shore in 2008. In 2009, she painted “Inspirational Portraits” of people who help to make our world a better place. Her series in 2010 was about multigenerational families and was called “Celebrating Families on the Eastern Shore.” In 2012, the focus of her paintings were dogs and their owners in “For the Love of Dogs.”

Evie is a native Floridian and has a BA in Visual Art from Florida State University in Tallahassee. In 1999, she relocated north to Alexandria, Virginia where she studied figurative work in oil under Danni Dawson and Robert Liberace at the Torpedo Factory. After moving to the Eastern Shore with her husband, she was introduced to pastel for the first time in workshops with Mary Pritchard. She has taken pastel portrait workshops with Claudia Post and William Schneider and studied sculpture with Rick Casali. Her work in pastel and oil has garnered numerous awards over the years, including Best in Show in Chesapeake College’s 2012 and 2013 Annual Shows, KIFA’s “Human Form Show” for 2013 and 2014 and most recently, Queen Anne’s County Centre for the Arts’ show, “Animals, Wild and Domestic.” As a portrait artist, Evie always strives to “get an accurate likeness of the people she paints, along with a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface.” Evie Baskin is a partner with The Artists Gallery, a member of the Maryland Portrait Society, The Working Artists Forum, The Portrait Society of America and RiverArts of Chestertown.

Evie’s “Paths of Life” series will be featured in The Artists Gallery throughout the month of September. The Artists Gallery is located at 239 High Street in Chestertown, and is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10-5 and Sundays from 12:30-4:30.
