Visions of Venice

"Dedicated to my good friend Judy Kohl who made it all possible."

During the spring of 2011 Linda had the good fortune to spend three weeks in Venice, Italy.  Her good friend Judy Kohl invited her to visit while she was there to attend a Giornata de Studio, or symposium, held at the Archivio di Stato de Venezia to honor her late husband Benjamin G. Kohl, Mellon Professor Emeritus of Vassar College.  Ben was a benefactor of the Archivio and an internationally recognized medieval/renaissance scholar of fourteenth century Venetian history.  They were joined by family members and many friends from Kent County for the memorial and some memorable meals and events.

Over their three week stay, Linda was able to visit the Biennale, the biannual exhibition of international modern art held in the Gardens in Castello.  She also watched the Volgalonga (the Long Row), when the Grand Canal is closed to motor boats.  Racing gondolas, dragon boats, canoes, kayaks, all rowed, make the twenty mile “row” from San Marco out to the islands of Murano and Burano and down the Grand Canal back into Venice.  Linda also went to Murano and Burano, photographing and sketching along the way.  One delightful morning was spent on the Piazza breakfasting at Florian’s under a rain canopy.  Venice with its architectural shapes, earth colors, figures and atmospheric light is a delight to paint whether from an apartment window, a small campo or the Piazza San Marco itself.  Linda’s show, Visions of Venice, includes six plein air pieces and sketches as well as fifteen studio pieces.
